North West Province, 1999

The North West Province coat of arms, granted 07 May 1999, has a shield uniquely styled on the colours, and in some way also the pattern, of the national flag. It is divided into quarters of red and blue with a green diagonal cross edged in white; on this cross is a diamond shape with a calabash in the centre, representing Tswana culture. Their tribal lands formed the basis of the former “Bantustan” of Bophuthatswana and the province’s other regions with a mainly Tswana population. On the crest of the shield is a golden ring, edged with silver, and silver buffalo horns with a sunflower, representing the agriculture: sunflowers are grown commercially here. It also signifies the sunshine needed to produce crops. Two sable antelope on a green base support the shield. The motto in Setswana is “KAGISO LE TSWELELOPELE”, meaning ‘Peace and Prosperity’.
